St. John’s Governors

GOVERNORS’ PRAYER

God our Father,

We seek your blessing and support in all the responsibilities we bear as Governors of this school.

May we reach our decisions prompted by a desire to serve.

May your Spirit grant us wisdom and understanding.

Keep the pupils and staff and all associated with our School under your watchful eye, so that the purpose of our school may flourish for the good of all at all times.

St John the Evangelist – Pray for us

We make this prayer through Christ our Lord. Amen

Please see below for information about what our governing body do and how they ensure that we are providing your children with the quality of education they deserve. You can get in touch with Governors via the school office but should contact the Headteacher or class teacher in the first instance regarding operational matters.

I became a school governor in 2009. At that time, I was a catechist for Confirmation in St. John’s parish and as the saying goes “If you want something doing, ask a busy person!” So Father Terry asked one Sunday after church, and of course I duly accepted.

I still recall the first time I visited St. John’s school. What struck me was the welcome I received from everyone I met, and then later as I visited more, the overwhelming sense of community, togetherness and dedication that the staff have for the children. I can only describe it as God’s love in action, and it is my hope that every child and every family experiences this during their time here.

As a foundation governor, I promised the Bishop that I would work to ensure the catholic character of the school. This reminded me of a promise that I made as a parent when my children were baptised “to bring children up in the Catholic faith”. With all the pressures of today’s modern society, neither of these promises is easy. However, I firmly believe that as a Catholic school, St. John’s is here to support families in sharing faith and helping children grow in friendship with Jesus, to their full potential.

As well as being a parent and governor, I am a civil engineer, having worked in the rail industry for over 15 years. I became an engineer because I loved problem solving and wanted to make a difference in society. I have since become a STEM ambassador, hoping to inspire the next generation of inventors.

In my spare time, I like walking, cycling, baking, gardening, knitting and camping with my family!

It is a real honour and a privilege for me to be elected to bring my experience and commitment to the role of Parent Governor in our children’s school. All three of my Children are currently pupils here and it is exciting to be able to share in their journey of “Learning to Love and Loving to Learn”

My background is in Catholic education at secondary level. My subject is RE, but every role I’ve held has always had a strong pastoral focus from being a Head of Year, subject leader for PSHCE or a senior leader with responsibility for ethos. My current role as Lay Chaplain to our Catholic secondary school, St Wilfrid’s, brings the added benefit of strengthening links with our senior school and the wider Catholic Community.

In my own life I have been hugely inspired by these words often attributed to St Francis of Assisi, “Preach the Gospel at all times and when necessary use words”. I see this as a call to action which led me to volunteer to be a Governor. With that in mind I believe that it is central to the role Parent Governor to provide support to Mrs Bono and her dedicated team of staff who always go the extra mile for our children’s education.

I am very positive about the role of foundation governor, I believe it reflects the interest and support of all local parishioners in catholic education generally and in St Johns school particularly.
I have had contact with the school for many years, as a grandparent of past students and professionally as part of the link between the school and St Wilfrids Catholic school Crawley. In my professional role as a Specialist Teacher and manager of the SEND team for a number of years, I developed educational links with St Johns. I was also a member of the chaplaincy support group at St Wilfrids, enhancing our links with primary schools in the diocese, in particular St Johns .
I am particularly happy that I can reflect those professional skills, as a member of the governor's Spiritual Life committee and of the SEND Commitee.
Under the leadership of Mrs Bono , I believe we will develop even further our catholic ethos, building on the commitments of the past and with aspirations for the future.

School Governors provide strategic leadership and accountability in schools. They have a responsibility for the aims and objectives of the school and for the supporting policies, plans  and procedures within which the school operates. At St John’s, this includes the promotion and maintenance of the school’s Catholic character and mission.

Governors determine and keep these under review and evaluate the progress the school is making. They are responsible for the management of the school budget, premises and admissions. Governors appoint and work closely with the Headteacher providing challenge and support- they are the Headteacher’s “critical friend”.

The Headteacher manages these Governors responsibilities and is responsible for the internal organisation and day to day management and control of the school, for the delivery of the curriculum and for the implementation of policy and strategic framework established by the Governing Body.

The majority of our Governors are Foundation Governors who are appointed by the Bishop with responsibilities to ensure the religious character of the school and that it is run in accordance with his policies on education in his Diocese.
